Newham Goods Truro

4mm/ft P4 Gauge

Newham started life as the terminus for the West Cornwall railway at Truro in April 1855 and continued to be so until May 1859, when most trains were diverted into the new station of the Cornwall / G.W.R. railway leaving Newham as a goods depot with the occasional passenger train.

The West Cornwall Railway came about by the Hale and Penzance railway and its constituencies wishing to build a line to Truro and its quays to tap into the china clay and farm produce market .I.K. Brunel was engaged as the engineer for the line which surprisingly for him was built to the standard gauge. The station at Newham was a Brunel style overall roof with a hip-roofed station building, single platform and goods shed plus other buildings already on the quay at the time. The goods depot lasted well into the 20th century also avoiding the Beeching era and finally closing in 1976.

The layout was built for the 18.83 challenge and took 2˝ years to build. All track and points are hand laid ply and rivet, 95% of the buildings are scratch built plus a few small kits. All the ship models are kits from Langley. The base boards are constructed on the Barry Norman style of 4mm ply box beams for ends and sides and 6.5 mm ply for the top. Points are worked using piano wire and bell cranks.

Wood's Wharf

7mm/ft O Gauge

It is nearly a year since the South Hants Club lost one of its most talented and popular members. When he died Stuart Wood's layout, "Wood's Wharf", still incomplete, was taken in hand by the South Hants Model Railway Club and we have taken on the task of finishing it to exhibition standards. The layout was originally built as an '0' gauge layout to fit in a small room at home.

Although there is still a lot to do, it is already "up and running" and you will be able to watch shunting operations on the quay. At present you must imagine the canal boats which will grace the front of this diorama and all the detail which will be added to the wharf itself, its buildings and the locomotives and stock, to complete this tribute to a colleague of whom we have the fondest memories.

Wood's Wharf will be going out again, hopefully in a more complete state, to the 'Family Fun Day' at Fort Purbrook on July 10th.

Abbotstone

7mm O Gauge

A club built layout, based on architecture of the Midland Railway, designed to allow several train movements at any one time.

With its use of two 20 lever mechanically interlocked frames, it demonstrates a new method of train control without the need for section or isolating switches. Signals determine who should drive the train and with the route locked, the operators can drive with the knowledge the route is correct, (just like the prototype). Up to 4 trains can be moving at any one time within the station area.

Our model represents a through station on a line that passes through the Midlands on its way to London. The up line approaches Abbotstone via a single-track section through a tunnel. Today, the line is blocked beyond the station and all trains are terminating with passengers being provided with alternative means of continuing their journeys. Near the tunnel, the line diverges and through the bridge an M.P.D. is available to turn and service the locomotives.

A branch line also arrives at Abbotstone via a second tunnel and is served by a separate platform and goods facilities. The branch has access to a private siding where materials are supplied to a coffin maker's business, W. E. Boxem. The finished coffins are loaded into a van and moved across to the main yard for eventual transfer to London. The branch goods trains are fitted with "Winterley Couplings", a unique system allowing complete freedom, as there are no magnets within the track.

Model Railway Developments

www.emardee.org.uk

Model Railway Developments uses new methods and technologies to provide better models which are easier to build, and build well. The range is for 4mm scale components (00, EM and P4), and for 7mm scale narrow gauge wagons and includes:

Horrington

4mm OO Gauge

Horrington is a station on the Somerset and Dorset. Set in the mid 1950's, the layout was conceived as a test track and grew to its present size when my business partner and co builder couldn't fit it in his house! Therefore, we decided to make it an exhibition layout, using as many items off the shelf as we could find, or reused from previous projects. This is our first exhibition layout, and it took us approximately 6 months to reach the current level of finish. It is a project that is far from complete, but to a level at which it can be exhibited. The layout uses wireless DCC supplied by 'The Engine Shed', and the project has been sponsored by S & T Joinery Ltd, The Electric Loft Ladder Company. We hope you enjoy looking at our layout, and please feel free to ask us any questions.

Widley & St George

4mm OO Gauge

This is our 'Thomas the Tank Engine' layout where the young at heart and the not so young, can get some hands on experience at driving the trains. One of the locomotives has an on board camera so you can get a driver's eye view of the passing scenery.

The model demonstrates various methods which can be used to produce a working model railway using mainly proprietary items 'straight out the box', modified or simple scratch builds. Please feel free to ask. It's great fun watching the trains go by.

Round the Bend

7mm O Gauge

"Round the Bend" is an 0 gauge running track (no scenery) consisting of 3 oval tracks of approx. 12feet by 20feet plus storage loops.

For exhibition purposes we maintain a continuous display of a wide range of 0 gauge stock. This includes Southern/GWR era, BR steam and diesels, plus American.

We also encourage visitors to bring stock to run; sorry no live steam.

We invite you to relax and watch the trains roll by.

Ron will be demonstrating etched kit construction and will have examples of his work on his stand. Please prevent him from completing any more, by asking him how he does it.

Southwark Bridge Models

Tel: 023 8026 2414
e-mail: ivansmith@talktalk.net
www.sbmodels.org

Southwark Bridge Models was originally started in early 2003 to supply kits, not provided by other manufacturers, for the Southwark Bridge layout.

There are more than five dozen vehicle kits of mainly LSWR and GWR prototypes (a new range of GWR Hoppers has just been introduced to go with the TOAD Brake Vans), together with a range of line side accessories.

Custom transfers are available for the kits in the range.

The major aims of Southwark Bridge Models are, firstly, to produce very high quality kits (including underframes) with little or no compromise from the prototype. Secondly, and equally importantly, to produce kits which fit together easily and accurately with clear, and comprehensive, instructions?

Peter Squibb

Model Signal Demonstrator

Peter will be demonstrating signal construction at which he has an enviable reputation, please ask about his work and methods. Peter's book 'A Scratchbuilder's guide to Semaphore Signal Construction' is on sale in the hall.

Hemlock Down

4mm EM Gauge

Hemlock Down is an exercise in building a layout which is both small and light. As such it is only 8' 6" in length and can, if need be, be erected by one person. It can be transported in an estate car. The station itself owes much to Hemyock on the Culm Valley line. The siding arrangements have been modified and the Creamery, which was such a feature of Hemyock removed. However, it remains a small rural station in the light railway tradition, which buildings in the standardised style set by Arthur Paine for many other light railways all over England. The baseboards are built entirely from 3mm and 6mm birch ply, using a cellular box construction which keeps them light and strong. Ratio bases are used for plain track and ply sleepers and rivets for the point work.

Nictun Borrund 2K

4mm OO Gauge

Our 1965ish 3rd rail BR(S)Nictun Borrund is a layout which was based on the US Army building a branch line during WWII. Had it been built it would have come from the Meon Valley Line to Southwick House (SHAPE HQ in WWII) just behind Portsdown Hill, near Portsmouth.

As co-builder of NB, I liked it so much I thought I would replicate it and bring it into the 21st century based on it surviving the Dr Beeching cuts and prospering today. (and to run my modern stock )

The goods yard has gone, replaced by car sales and petrol station and the old WWII military sidings developed to house a wagon maintenance facility. The power sub-station for third rail power has also been upgraded.

34th Street (The Last Summer)

3.5mm HO Gauge

"The Last Summer"?

Milwaukee was connected to Chicago by the North Shore Line, an interurban with a very fast service, even by today's standards. The trains ran into their Chicago terminal over the famous "EL". For this part of their journey they used the provided thirds rail supply. This system is used by this line to connect to the downtown shopping area that is 34th Street.

The interurban cars provide a rapid passenger service whilst both steam and diesel locomotives switch cars for the few sidings around this yard.

The cars are switched using a card system. A picture card for each car, when dealt out, dictates where the operator places the individual cars, or try to.

Why the sub title?

The North Shore Electric closed on January 31st 1963. This then is the last summer of the operation for our little line. Hence the film crews making a documentary for posterity. If you have any questions, do please ask the man with the throttle!

Rhineside

2˝mm 12mm Gauge

The German West Rhine double track line running along the West bank of the river Rhine, in the gorge South of Koblenz, by the 'Loreley' in the 1990-2004 period.

It features a proscenium arch which hides overhead lighting units, Faller road vehicle in action, working colour light signals, overhead line equipment (with pantographs raised) and with 10 trains kept in a rotation of near continuous action…Lots of passing trains action.

DSCF2327.jpg (866975 bytes) N58-479.jpg (767612 bytes)

Hall Quay

2mm FS Gauge

Hall Quay is a model of Hall Quay in Great Yarmouth as it might has been in the Nineteen Twenties. It is not a scale model but is as close as I could make it from the photographs available to me. If you have better information I would be pleased to try to incorporate it.

The Tram track is 7mm gauge i.e. 3ft 6in. and the Dockside tramway is 9.42mm i.e. Standard Gauge all made from the 2mm association parts. The running rails being code 40 and the inner or check rail code 30. The road surface is Wickes Patching Plaster. The Tram overhead is 0.010 in. dia phosphor bronze wire and is live.

All rolling stock was scratch built as were the buildings: rolling stock from nickel silver and brass, buildings from plastic.

Great Bardfield

4mm P4 Gauge

Like most areas of the country, Essex had its fair share of proposed lines which never came to fruition. Great Bardfield is a "might have been" station on a fictitious extension to the Colne Valley and Halstead Railway. The line connected Great Yeldham on the CV & H to Ongar on the Great Eastern Railway, thus providing a direct, if slow, link to London.

The model portrays rural Essex in the mid to late1950s. Like many stations in the area, the village it claims to serve is a good mile distance away. Decline and ultimate closure was inevitable once roads were improved enough to support local buses and freight hauliers. The line had a brief resurgence during the war but closure came in 1962, before even Dr Beeching could do his worst.

Please feel free to talk to the operators, but please bring your own Tizer, acid drop Spangles and Kodak Brownie 127 and join us at the end of the platform for a wallow in nostalgia.
